Course content

Unit 1: Blood Circulatory System

  • Recognize that the circulatory system consists of blood, heart, and blood vessels
  • List the components of blood and state the function of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and blood plasma
  • Outline the structure and function of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) in terms of wall elasticity, thickness and size of lumen
  • Recognize that heart pumps blood throughout the body
  • Investigate and state the effect of physical activity on pulse rate
  • Locate a pulse point
  • Show an awareness of the different examples of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart attack and hypertension


Unit 2: Reproductive System

  • State the importance of reproduction in living things
  • State the two modes of reproduction (sexual and asexual)
  • Identify the main parts of the male and female reproductive systems in man
  • List common diseases associated with reproductive systems
  • Interpret data related to common cardiovascular and reproductive diseases


Unit 3: Biodiversity

  • Give a simple definition of biodiversity
  • Explain the importance of biodiversity to mankind
  • Show an understanding that biodiversity can be affected by natural calamities such as cyclones and droughts
  • Discuss ways by which human activities such as deforestation, pollution, degradation of habitat, invasive alien species, pollution, global warming can have a negative impact on biodiversity
  • Suggest solutions to the above threats


Unit 4: Nutrition in Plants

  • Explain photosynthesis as a process of producing food in plants
  • State the word equation for photosynthesis
  • Explain how a leaf is adapted for photosynthesis (large surface area, veins, stomata, chlorophyll)
  • Identify the different tissues making a dicot leaf with the help of a diagram
  • Investigate that some substances (e.g. particles/water) can move from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
  • Observe vascular bundles in a cross-section of a root and a stem using microscope/poster
  • Recognise vascular bundles using a cross-section diagram of a root and stem
  • Identify the xylem and phloem in a vascular bundle of a root and a stem
  • Investigate and state the factors that are important for photosynthesis
  • (Propose/conduct a simple experiment to determine factors which are important for photosynthesis)
  • Communicate the proposed experiments/results of experiments on factors which are important for photosynthesis




 Measurement in Biology

  • Count and record the status of biodiversity (e.g. number of organisms/species) in a given/selected ecosystem
  • Record the amount of oxygen (e.g. number of bubbles) released during photosynthesis
  • Represent the recorded data using appropriate diagrams
  • Count pulse rate under different conditions (e.g. at rest, after exercise)
  • Find out/ calculate the magnification of simple specimens under the microscope

About Ashley Purhooa

Ashley has taught at the secondary level for the past 7 years at both local and international schools.


He has a background in Biotechnology Engineering.


His educational expertise is broad, ranging from the British National Curriculum, International Baccalaureate programmes, the Mauritian National Curriculum and the Cambridge International Examination Curriculum. He has contributed to the success of many students in their O-Level & A-Level Biology courses, with many ranking them in the top 10 in the HSC examinations.


He is a science communicator who loves making appealing science videos and sharing them on social media. He believes that looking at the world through the eyes of science makes it much more exciting.


Ashley graduated First Class with Distinction in his Biotechnology Engineering degree from the Acharya Institute of Technology in Bangalore, India in 2014.


He obtained his educator's license from the Mauritius Institute of Education in 2015. 

In 2020 he got his International PGCE from the University of Derby in the UK.


Ashley is a keen promoter of scientific awareness and does so through communication and the creation of compelling educational content.
